Suspension Repair

The modern heavy-duty truck suspension is a combination of numerous components, which all work together in order to provide you with the smoothest possible driving experience, while also helping you to maintain total control over your truck at all times.

When suspension components start to wear out, and excessive amounts of clearance begin building up in the worn parts, you start to see it in uneven tire wear, pulling to one side of the road or an inability to stay in your lane. In an extreme case, a suspension component could fail, resulting in an inoperative vehicle or worse – a crash.

That’s why suspension repair is such a critical component of Ledom’s Repair.

Uneven Or Excessive Tire Wear

Whenever your suspension starts to wear down, one of the first signs that things are not all right is excessive and uneven tire wear. Outright failure may be the result of extensive suspension wear. Fortunately, modern suspension suspensions are well built and usually, failure can be avoided – as long as you have your suspension checked when you first have any signs of problems.

Suspension Repair Parts

The components of the suspension that make up this crucial aspect of driving include the frame or chassis, leaf springs, coil springs, dampeners including shock absorbers and struts, and torsion or anti-swing bars. Usually, a suspension system includes a combination of these parts.

Each of these important components has a very important task within the overall system, and all of them work together within their respective roles to provide you with a manageable ride and helping to keep your truck safely out on the road.

Springs – Coil Or Leaf

Coil springs and leaf springs are designed for absorbing vertical forces so your tires stay in direct contact with the ground. Frequently, passenger trucks have leaf springs on the rear and coil springs on the front, while many trucks and SUVs have coil springs on both the rear and front positions, or they have independent rear and front suspensions.

Torsion bars can act as springs on some trucks.

Shock Absorbers And Anti-Sway Bars

Dampeners (shock absorbers and struts) dissipate energy that the coil springs absorb so that if there is any up and down motion it is turned into none, basically. When dampeners are in good working order, they allow passengers in the truck to be rarely affected by dips or bumps in the road.

Some trucks have another kind of torsion bar as well, which are also called anti-roll or anti-sway bars. They are located across the front of the truck and help to level out any side to side movements whenever the truck is going around a corner. Anti-sway bars are a critical component for a truck that helps these big and heavy vehicles maintain an even keel while going around corners.

Other Critical Components

The ball joints are another critical component of a truck’s suspension system. Ball joints are made out of extra-tough steel, and it acts as a connector or pivot between the control arms and suspension. They help to support the weight of your truck and can be a factor as well in setting the alignment properly.

4-Wheel Drive

If your truck is 4-wheel-drive, then there are many other suspension components that can cause big problems with wear or breakage.
